In February 2017, a casual chat in the Cavaliers’ locker room caused an uproar. Kyrie Irving casually said in a teammate’s podcast: “Have you ever thought that the earth might be flat?” This seemingly joking remark set off a discussion storm on the Internet that lasted for several years.
At the time, Irving, 28, was at the peak of his career and had just helped the Cavaliers win the first championship in team history. No one would have thought that this All-Star point guard, known for his gorgeous style of play, would become the focus of public opinion because of a scientific issue.

“We were just chatting that day,” podcast host Richard Jefferson later recalled, “Kyrie suddenly started discussing the flat earth theory very seriously, and I thought he was joking.” But Irving subsequently insisted on this view on many occasions, and even debated with MIT professors who were present during the 2018 All-Star Weekend.
There are several key factors behind this controversy:
Irving grew up in an environment that encourages doubts. His father once told him “Don’t believe what you read in books.”
NBA players generally have a short education period. League data shows that the average college experience is only 2.6 years.
Social media algorithms expose Irving to a lot of unconventional theoretical content.
Scientists responded quickly. NASA publicly invited Irving to visit the space center, and the Harvard Department of Physics produced a popular science video specifically for athletes. But the most surprising thing is that Irving really invested time in studying this issue-he bought a professional astronomical telescope at his own expense and invited astrophysicists to his home to discuss.
After 2019, Irving’s attitude gradually changed. “I still encourage people to be skeptical,” he said in an interview, “but I also understand the importance of scientific methods.” In 2020, he deleted the relevant remarks on social media, but insisted that “questioning is everyone’s right.”
Nike remained silent during this period until the two parties terminated the contract for other reasons in 2022. The designer of Anta, Irving’s current sponsor, said: “We are more concerned about Kyrie’s creativity on the court than his views off the court.”
This incident reflects a deep problem in professional sports: when young athletes focus on professional training too early, their basic education is often lacking. As an education expert said: “We should not laugh at Irving, but think about how to help these geniuses grow more comprehensively.”
